The name of these animals is not an Aboriginal word; it has been derived from an Arabic word for large species. This name was subsequently transferred to the Emu by early European explorers to Australia. This species belong to the family of the Ratite that includes Ostrich, Rhea, Cassowary, and Kiwi.
